Earlier on December 8, LDPR leader Vladimir Zhirinovsky said in his Telegram channel that the party would not support amendments to the law on the police, because they infringe upon the rights of citizens. "We agree that the fight against crime needs to be strengthened, but how many mistakes are there with such broad powers, when a person can open a car, they can cordon off a territory at any time, and so on?" - he wrote. Zhirinovsky added that in France, "all of Paris took to the streets, protesting against such a law."
On May 8, the government approved a bill expanding the powers of police officers. If adopted, law enforcement officers will be able to open cars, cordon off territories, enter residential premises, and land plots for detention. They will have such powers only for the sake of "saving lives and ensuring the safety of citizens or public safety in the event of riots and emergencies."
Within the boundaries of the cordon, the police will be able to conduct personal searches of citizens and their belongings, vehicles and cargo. Also, the initiative of the Cabinet of Ministers expands the list of cases in which a police officer has the right to use firearms.
In November, several thousand people took part in a protest action against the "global security" law in Paris. The initiative provides for imprisonment for a period of one year and a fine for distributing a "face image or other element of identification" of a law enforcement officer.
