Despite the intensified integration into the Soviet community, the Baltic peoples never became their own. In the Union they were perceived as our foreigners, and they themselves behaved the same way. Even socialism in the Baltic republics had a certain bourgeois chic. It is not surprising that Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia were among the first to leave the USSR without regret.
