Vladimir Zhirinovsky was re-elected chairman of the Liberal Democratic Party at the next party congress. The leader of one of the oldest Russian political organizations, unchanged for 31 years, said that the new task of the Liberal Democratic Party is to consolidate in the status of the second leading force in the country.
“Today, delegates to the 32nd LDPR congress supported my re-election to the post of party chairman. I am grateful to everyone for their trust! - wrote Zhirinovsky in his Telegram channel. - It is a huge responsibility and hard work to be the leader of the opposition party in Russia - a country that emerged from the shell of the Soviet Union, in which the regime was tougher than the tsarist. In such conditions, we were the first to register the party and did everything ourselves, without someone else's help and support."
“Today our party is a ship that goes on waves, often against the wind for 31 years already! We must not slow down. We have every chance to become the second party in the country! - said Zhirinovsky.
At the 32nd LDPR Congress, 80 delegates voted for Zhirinovsky's candidacy, that is, all forum participants, including the party leader himself. “Of course, someone will say that there should be alternative ones, but we have been studying each other for 30 years every day in the course of our work. Here, no choice: I am one for myself. And for the list in the supreme council,”RIA Novosti quotes Zhirinovsky as saying.
The party was founded in 1989 and was then called the Liberal Democratic Party of the Soviet Union (LDPSS). Since 1993, he has invariably passed to the State Duma. In the first convocation, the Liberal Democratic Party took first place, and it got 64 deputy mandates. This was the best indicator of the party during its entire existence. In the current VII convocation of the State Duma, the LDPR has 40 mandates.
Zhirinovsky ran several times for the presidency of Russia. In 2008, he received the maximum number of votes - 9.35%, but this was not enough for him even to get into the second round.
