The research arm of IBM and one of the world's leading perfume manufacturers, Symrise, have agreed to cooperate. Companies have created artificial intelligence that can create new smells.

The development was named Philyra - in honor of the ancient Greek nymph-oceanid Filira, the patroness of writing and fragrances. The program uses machine learning and analyzes the components, their combinations and industry trends, and generates formulas for new aromas.

Philyra studies thousands of fragrance and natural fragrance formulations to try to identify recurring combinations and to identify potential "gaps" in the current fragrance portfolio on the market. AI can also select alternative raw materials for perfume, determine the dosage of components and predict the reaction of people to a new smell, and then compares the resulting fragrance with existing ones.

Two fragrances developed by Philyra will be used in a new line of perfumes from the Brazilian brand O Boticário. True, both have been tweaked by perfumers to emphasize a specific "note" and ensure that they stay on the skin long enough. Symrise also plans to provide Phylira technology to its perfumers around the world, as well as to use it in training aspiring professionals.
