Everyone or almost everyone loves smokey eyes - “smoky” makeup, which makes the eyes languid, emphasizes the brightness of proteins and is generally considered the most seductive make-up in the universe, regularly winning the fight over red lipstick. But many are afraid to make smoky, considering the technique too complicated, and dark shadows are a tool that can only be approached with a diploma of a make-up artist. BeautyHack special correspondent Moore Soboleva breaks stereotypes and shows six make-ups that can be done even without special skills, while Asya Zabavskaya takes pictures.

The first thing to know about smokey is that it requires good brushes and a good base. The base (we used the Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion) - to make the shadows lie tighter and not roll. Brushes - because any smokey is based on shading, and it is possible to make it neatly without brushes if the color is bright. The second thing to know about smoky is that they don't have to be black: you can choose any relatively dark shade. Whether to accentuate the lower eyelid, make an arrow, limit yourself to one color or make a complex transition - it's all up to you.

Black minimalistic smokey

How is it done:

Primer Eyeshadow Primer Potion, Urban Decay

Dual-Intensity Eyeshadow, Sycorax, NARS

Instroke Eyeliner, shade Shikkoku Black, Shiseido

Sumptuous Knockout Mascara, Black, Estée Lauder

Smokey is usually shaded from a dark color to the notorious haze with the help of a “transitional” flesh color - this makes the makeup look softer. You can use one color, but only if the shadows are of very good quality and do not “get dirty” when shading. Narsovskie Sycorax are just like that: they fit well on the eyelid and at the same time lend themselves to very soft shading. For such a make-up, a tightly knit brush in the form of a spatula or barrel and a fluffy shading brush will be enough. To make the makeup look complete, I added a black arrow with the new Shiseido Instroke Eyeliner - it comes with a great thin brush that makes a bright line of any thickness from the first stroke.

Crimson smoky

How is it done:

Primer Eyeshadow Primer Potion, Urban Decay

Shadows Ombre Première, shades of Pourpre Profond and Noir Satin, Chanel

Eyeliner Signature de Chanel, shade Noir, Chanel

Mascara Grand Volume Lash Styler Fanned Out Effect, shade Black, IsaDora

Red eyeshadows are loved by the creative director of makeup at Chanel Lucia Pica, and with her the entire progressive makeup community. The updated line of Ombre Première eyeshadows includes the outstanding shade of Pourpre Profond (deep dark red in a creamy texture), which I made the main one and applied directly to the eyelid with my finger. To make the smoky look more dramatic, I decided to make the shading with a dark matte shade Noir Satin - these are already powdery shadows. The arrow was drawn with Signature de Chanel eyeliner - this is a long-standing and still successful classic of the brand.

Gray-silver smoky

How is it done:

Primer Eyeshadow Primer Potion, Urban Decay

Palette eyeshadow Palette 4 Couleurs, shade Smoky, Clarins

Shadow pencil Phyto-Eye Twist, shade 4 Steel, Sisley

Mascara Rock Couture Extreme Volume Mascara, Catrice

Gray smoky look less aggressive than black, but do not lose their showiness from this. The Clarins palette is more than a classic, combining slightly satin black, gray, shiny silver and white for under the brow. You can draw with them an equally classic make-up on the principle “from light in the corner of the eye to dark in the outer corner”, but it is much more interesting, layering silver on gray, to play on the contrast of textures. In order to emphasize this contrast, I added glitter eyeshadow from my favorite series Phyto-Eye Twist to the makeup and blend it on the lower eyelid.

Brown smoky

How is it done:

Primer Eyeshadow Primer Potion, Urban Decay

Meet Matt (e) Nude, theBalm Eyeshadow Palette (Matt Rosen, Matt Garcia, Matt Wood and Matt Singh shades)

Longlasting Eye Pencil, Hot Chocolate, Essence

Jalouse mascara, shade 01, Vivienne Sabo

Smokey can be so soft that it will fit into any office dress code. The effect is achieved not only due to the brown and nude tones, but also due to the texture - matte shadows look more strict and draw attention to the face rather than force you to consider the actual makeup. A few years ago it was difficult to find good matte shadows - they are often too hard, insufficiently pigmented and “dirty”. Now there are a lot of good options - this theBalm palette turned out to be excellent. The shadows are bright, dense and so good they look creamy. Instead of drawing an arrow (which makes any make-up look more graphic), I traced the lower and upper eyelids with brown Essence pencil and shaded with shadows.

Duochrome smoky with colored arrow

How is it done:

Primer Eyeshadow Primer Potion, Urban Decay

Eyeshadow palette Venus II, Lime Crime (using shades of Pigeon, Marsh, Fly and Boot)

Eyeliner Cat W Eyeliner Black, Wycon

B-Line Liner, Republic of Splendor, Smith & Cult

Mascara Arctic Holiday Volume Mascara, Kiko Milano

At first and even at second glance, Venus II is not the most obvious smoky palette: there are not many dark colors, mostly bright enough. But due to the depth of shades, you can make wonderful colored smoky with it, if you wish, add a shiny black Boot to any of the bright options. The protagonist of this makeup is a gray-green-pink duochrome Pigeon, shaded with Marsh Marsh and Golden Fly. I painted over the lower eyelid and upper mucous membrane with a black pencil from the new Wycon collection, shaded it with shadows, and made the green arrow wide and low, in a neo-Egyptian style - the Smith & Cult felt-tip pen was very convenient.

Emerald Smoky

How is it done:

Primer Eyeshadow Primer Potion, Urban Decay

Cover Shot Palette, Smoky, Smashbox (STFU, Slayer, Big Night, Feature and Instinct shades used)

Shadow pencil Eye Color Contour, shade Jet Black, Burberry

Eyeliner Roll It Disc Eyeliner, Artdeco

Excessive Lash Black Make Up For Ever

Last year, Smashbox released a series of compact Cover Shot palettes - each of the six boxes contains eight perfectly combined shades. In principle, there are many smokey palettes in the world, but the one proposed by Smashbox is one of the most successful that I have seen. Six rich shades of trendy and cool colors, from burgundy to black, a successful combination of textures, transitional and lightening shades - this is really a thing that can be used to draw smokey of any complexity. I chose the emerald version: for a greater depth of color, I first scanned the eye with a blackening Burberry jumbo pencil, then filled in black glittering shadows at the lash edge and mixed them with green. The transition was made using a flesh tint from a palette - it was perfect for this purpose. The eyeliner is the new Artdeco with a roller applicator similar to a miniature pizza knife: it looks very cool and is quite easy to use when you need a super thin line, but the sensitive eyelid can scratch a little.
