The head of the executive committee of the Union of Pediatricians Leyla Namazova-Baranova said that those who have had COVID-19 have a serious change in spermatogenesis. In her opinion, this in the future may affect their ability to conceive. Anatoly Altstein, professor at the Gamaleya Research Center for Epidemiology and Microbiology, questioned Namazova-Baranova's conclusion that, as a result, problems with low fertility threaten the next generations.

“There may be some influence of the virus that infects the testicles of boys and the ovaries of girls. But, I think, if it was widespread, they would have paid attention long ago [doctors] »Altstein told the Daily Storm.

Professor of the Research Center of Epidemiology and Microbiology named after Gamaleya noted that "if the virus got into the testicles and hit them, it's a nuisance." But, according to Altstein, the problem is not widespread. “Moreover, this cannot affect entire generations! The next ones will have their own boys, who are all right, "- the expert is convinced.

Altstein explained that the coronavirus "cannot make any hereditary changes in sperm in a way that would affect future generations." “This is an RNA virus. It is not in the DNA cycle. And such viruses do not integrate into cellular genomes and cannot change them, - explained the professor. - Therefore, it may affect a specific person who has had changes in the testicles. ".

He doesn’t think “like all the boys [with the coronavirus] have testicles,” so “the problem is not widespread.” “After all, most of the children have asymptomatic infection. Therefore, I treat this statement [Namazova-Baranova] with great doubt, " - added the professor. At the same time, he agreed with the opinion of the head of the executive committee of the Union of Pediatricians that children who have undergone coronavirus should be monitored. “Of course, you have to watch. It is always useful”, - Altstein believes.

Earlier, Leyla Namazova-Baranova said that in children who have had COVID-19, cognitive functions (attention, memory, speech) decrease by 30% and spermatogenesis changes, which in the future may affect their ability to conceive. According to her, examinations of infected children showed a 30% decrease in cognitive functions after suffering a coronavirus, even asymptomatic.

“Together with urologists, we draw attention to the fact that, in fact, in boys after suffering a coronavirus infection, there is a serious change in spermatogenesis. This threatens us in the future with problems with low fertility of the next generations,” - said Namazova-Baranova at the ONF round table, quoted by RIA Novosti.

Earlier, Areg Totolyan, director of the Pasteur Research Institute of Epidemiology and Microbiology named after Pasteur, Rospotrebnadzor, said that the assumption that schoolchildren are active carriers of coronavirus has not been confirmed. According to the academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, a study was carried out in one of the Scandinavian countries, which showed that it is not children who infect the elderly, but, on the contrary, the elderly - children.

The specialist explained that the virus multiplies in the body only if it has managed to penetrate the cells. The main “gateway” is the ACE2 receptor, the presence of which in cells increases with age. That is, in children it is minimal, and in adults (especially the elderly) it is maximal, Totolyan noted.

According to Rospotrebnadzor, about 50 thousand children were ill with COVID-19 in Russia in the first half of the year. A third of them did not have any symptoms of the disease, and only 0.2% suffered a severe coronavirus, the department said.
