GENEVA, 8 March. / TASS /. The effects of the global pandemic have in many cases affected women more than men. This has manifested itself, in particular, in the rise in domestic violence and the decline in opportunities for access to reproductive health care, World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Tedros Adanom Ghebreyesus said at a briefing in Geneva on Monday.

"In many cases, women have been disproportionately affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. We have witnessed a tremendous increase in violence against women and reduced access to health services related to gender and reproduction," he said.

“In relative terms, employment losses were higher for women than for men. Women also bear the additional burden of caring for children and the elderly,” the CEO continued. He recalled that women, who make up about 70% of medical workers in the world, in the context of the pandemic, have played "a key role in treating and saving lives."

On March 8, International Women's Day, Ghebreyesus thanked women in the health sector for "promoting health, keeping the world safe and helping vulnerable people."
