The main sign of a small or, as it is also called, "sloping" chin (scientifically - retrognathism): the lower jaw sunk inward and smoothly passes into the neck, there are no clear lines of the cheekbones. Such a chin in itself is not striking and is not perceived as a flaw. But with its size, it violates the proportions. From the side, a fuzzy oval of the face, early wrinkles, folds on the neck and a premature double chin are visible.

Reasons for the appearance of a sloping chin

Actress Olivia Colman

Most often this is an innate trait, but often there are external prerequisites:

erasure of bone tissue (appears with age);

deformation of the lower jaw due to a previous injury (fall, blow, etc.);

chin change due to unsuccessful plastic surgery on the face;

omission of the soft tissues of the face (against the background of this, the chin visually seems smaller, although in fact the size does not change).

How to tell if your chin is sloping?

In order to understand whether you need a correction of the lower jaw, you will need to take your profile photo. Next, draw three conventional lines: from the top of the forehead (along the hairline) to the eyebrows, from the eyebrows to the tip of the nose, from the tip of the nose to the bottom point of the chin. Ideally, all three lines should be approximately the same length, but if the third is much longer than the rest, there is definitely a problem of a sloping chin.

How to fix a sloping chin?

Actor Timothy Spall

For those who do not consider such a feature of the face attractive, experts offer several methods of correction:

1. Mentoplasty. This is a plastic surgery to change the shape, lines and size of the chin. Surgeons use both special implants and patients' own cartilage tissue. There are almost no scars, but there is a recovery period.

2. Bone grafting. The doctor cuts the bones of the lower jaw and pushes them forward a little. Then the bones are fixed with titanium screws. There are risks and a long recovery is required.

3. Correction with fillers. Preparations based on hyaluronic acid are injected into the lower part of the face, which allows you to form the desired lines, lift the cheekbones and make the chin sharper. The effect appears immediately, but there are long-acting fillers. When applied, the appearance will change for another 2-3 months. But this method is short-lived. Repeated injections will need to be done periodically.

4. Lipolifting. The essence of the method is that the patient's adipose tissue is injected into the chin and the desired shape is formed. The effect lasts up to a year, but complications, such as inflammation, are possible.

When choosing a method, you need to focus on contraindications and possible side effects.
