NOVOSIBIRSK, February 24. / TASS /. Specialists of the National Medical Research Center (NMRC) named after academician E. N. Meshalkin have successfully performed two operations on a patient with two congenital brain anomalies, occurring in two people per 1 million population, the press service of the center reports.
"Specialists of the National Medical Research Center named after Academician E. N. Meshalkin have successfully treated a 38-year-old patient with two dangerous congenital vascular anomalies of the brain. A similar combination of pathologies occurs in about two people per 1 million of the population. The Meshalkin Center is one of several institutions in Russia, which has the ability to provide closed-cycle medical care to such patients, "the message says.
The woman turned to doctors in absentia. At first she suffered from headaches, later she became scattered, confused in time, forgotten, epileptic seizures began, which could occur up to four times a day.
The doctors determined that the patient had two congenital brain pathologies - arteriovenous malformation (abnormal interlacing of pathologically altered blood vessels) and cavernoma (neoplasms in the form of a ball of blood vessels filled with blood). Cavernoma explains the appearance of epileptic seizures, in addition, threatening intracranial hemorrhage. First of all, the woman underwent endovascular embolization - a minimally invasive operation, the essence of which is to turn off the pathologically altered vessel from the bloodstream, after which the cavity in the left temporal lobe was removed, destroying, along with this, the epileptically active focus.
Thanks to such minimally invasive technologies, the risk of injury and complications is reduced, and rehabilitation is reduced. Now the patient has stopped seizures, she is preparing for discharge. The woman is to undergo a course of radiation therapy at the Meshalkin center, which will be the final stage of treatment. After that, she will be able to return to a fulfilling life.
