Reader's Digest magazine details how the image of the Barbie doll has changed over the decades in accordance with the trends of the time. And this is terribly interesting!
The first Barbie appeared in 1959 - it was named after Barbara, the daughter of the creator Ruth Handler. By the way, Ken, who appeared in 1961 and became Barbie's boyfriend, was named after Ruth's son, Kenneth Handler. Barbie was the first doll that didn't need to be bottle fed - she was independent and an adult. And she looked like this:
Barbie, introduced in 1965, was an astronaut! So, she was not always silly in pink - Barbie flew into space 4 years earlier than Neil Armstrong landed on the moon.
In the next few decades, Barbie changed dozens of serious professions (she was a surgeon, veterinarian and even a presidential candidate. Although, she really always loved pink). Scroll through the gallery to see how the image of Barbie has changed and which way she has come.
