Homemade face masks can be harmful to the skin, as they contain a variety of microflora and bacteria. Olga Zhukova, chief physician of the Moscow Scientific and Practical Center for Dermatovenerology and Cosmetology of the Moscow Healthcare Department, told the Moscow City News Agency about this.
“I have a very negative attitude towards such homemade masks, because there are no sterile food products. They always have some kind of microflora, bacteria. It largely depends on how this product was produced, how it was stored, in what dishes it was made,”said the agency's interlocutor.
She noted that certain foods, such as honey, citrus fruits or strawberries, can also cause allergies. According to the doctor, even if a person has not had a food allergy to the product, it can cause an unwanted reaction when applied to the skin.
“The skin is still not the gastrointestinal tract, it is vulnerable, there are no enzymes there that are ready to digest these products. The reaction may not be the same as we expect,”explained Olga Zhukova.
The doctor advised to use ready-made cosmetics and masks, after consulting a dermatologist.
“There are also inexpensive quality cosmetic products where the manufacturer ensures that it processes all the ingredients appropriately. They are even sterile before opening the tube,”she said.
