Dokha, 17 January - RIA Novosti. A Kuwaiti-based journalist insulted the winner of a beauty pageant in Algeria for her dark complexion, but makeup artists in the Persian Gulf see preference for light-skinned trends of the past.
After Khadija bin Hammu, originally from the desert region of Adrar in northern Mauritania, won the title of Miss Algeria, many social media users reacted negatively to her victory, criticizing the girl's dark complexion. A journalist from Kuwait, Fajr al-Said, also joined in the persecution of bin Hammu. "You do not participate in a cultural or folk festival, you are in a beauty contest, I cannot understand why they chose you," the journalist said on the air of her Internet channel.
She sarcastically remarked that the victory of a girl with such an appearance probably reflected the political situation in Algeria. "People do not like the political situation in Algeria, and they thought, let's make Khadija a beauty queen, if someone looks at Miss Algeria, they will immediately get angry," El Said said. However, the winner of the competition left her remarks unanswered.
In turn, the organizers of the beauty show supported the new Miss Algeria, expressing regret over the racist words of certain people. In addition, the famous Syrian singer Assala Nasri stood up for the Algerian beauty queen.
"There are no boundaries for beauty in the eyes of those who know that beauty and attractiveness do not have certain standards," the singer captioned a photo of Ben Hammu posted on her Instagram.
In turn, as Nuf al-Mannai, a makeup artist from Qatar, told RIA Novosti, in the Arab world, views on the parameters of female beauty have changed recently.
"If earlier women with a dark skin color invariably bleached their faces, because it was light skin that was considered attractive, now, on the contrary, in the Arab world and the Persian Gulf, where women with rather dark skin are often found, the western trend has come - to preserve their natural complexion, to emphasize, to highlight it, to select a tone for the color of the skin, and not lighter, "she shared.
