Ruslan Mellin, a physician from the Kemerovo Region, who is restoring the face of victims of domestic violence, published his paintings of his patients in the media.
In the article on Meduza, the maxillofacial surgeon posted a photo of his drawings inspired by the results of the "work" of tyrants in families. He also talked about several particularly atrocious incidents that he encountered during his practice.
Mellin said that dealing with facial injuries inflicted in families has already become routine for him. So, according to him, only his department receives four or five such patients a day. With the onset of the pandemic, the doctor said, women began to be brought to the hospital more often, mainly with fractures of the cheekbones (from a blow to the eye with a fist).
According to Mellin, the case with a 28-year-old girl without relatives was most memorable for him. She worked as a nurse for the mother of a man who, returning home drunk, hacked her face with an ax. Then, to cover up the crime, the man locked the woman in the basement for a month, from where she miraculously managed to escape.
Another patient considered the beatings by her husband to be "harmless." However, one day the husband, having learned that the woman was saving up money in order to get away from him, put signet rings on all his fingers (so that the injuries were more severe) and, dragging his wife by the hair, began to beat her.
- The children woke up from the noise, but this did not stop the abuser. He continued to beat the woman in front of two boys, - said the doctor.
Once a "heavy" patient of about 40 years old was brought to the department with a fracture of the lower jaw with a pronounced displacement of fragments, between which there was no contact at all. According to Mellin, this indicates the enormous strength of the traumatic factor (such wounds cannot be inflicted with a fist).
- There was a feeling that in front of me lay a body that had long since left the soul: bones covered with skin. She was 40 years old, but she looked at all 85, - he shared his thoughts.
The man who was with the patient all the time, having learned that an emergency notification was sent to the police for every patient with an injury, took the woman and left the hospital.
Mellin also recalled the case of a three-month-old child who was beaten by a drug-addicted mother. The baby was inherited by HIV, which complicated the course of treatment and aggravated the symptoms of neglected injuries.
The doctor also told the story of a 30-year-old girl who was morally suppressed and kept by a tyrant "with connections." The patient was admitted to the hospital with a fractured cheekbone, multiple bruises and a concussion.
“In other words, there was no living space on the girl’s face,” said the doctor.
It turned out that after using psychotropic substances, he kicked his partner in the face.
The doctor noted that his drawings do not depict the victims and tyrants themselves, but his colleagues in the images of the "heroes" of the stories. They gave their consent to the use of their faces in these stories.
