About 43 percent of Russians believe that people get tattoos to stand out from others. 41 percent believe that this is how people follow fashion. This is evidenced by the results of the VTsIOM poll, RIA Novosti reports.

According to 27 percent of those surveyed, a tattoo is a sign that a person was in prison. Another 20 percent see a tattoo as a desire to decorate themselves, 11 percent got tattoos as a sign of belonging to a group.

11 percent of the respondents have tattoos. Among them, 30 percent said that they did them "out of youth or stupidity." 59 percent of the respondents are people over 60 years old. Another 29 percent got a tattoo in the army to commemorate the service. 20 percent said they wanted to have a tattoo that was unreasonable. Such a desire was reported between the ages of 18 to 24 (60 percent) and from 25 to 34 (40 percent). Another six percent said they wanted to beautify themselves, according to survey participants aged 18 to 24 (28 percent).

Twenty-seven percent of Russians would like to get rid of their tattoos - this was the most frequently answered answer by people over 60 (35 percent). 69 percent would not like to remove their tattoos yet. Most often, the desire to get rid of a tattoo is caused by a feeling of shame and a feeling that it is indecent to have a tattoo (34 percent). Another 33 percent believe their tattoo is of poor quality and is visually unattractive. 16 percent got tired and stopped liking their tattoos.

The VTsIOM poll was conducted by phone on July 9, 2019, 1.6 thousand respondents, Russians aged 18 and over, took part in it.

Previously, the rapper Ivan Dremin, known as Face, did not pass the medical commission at the military registration and enlistment office of Bashkiria, including because of tattoos on his face. Doctors suspected that the 21-year-old musician had mental abnormalities. First Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Defense Committee, Alexander Sherin, said that conscripts who were not recruited because of tattoos on their faces have an overly rich inner world that does not quite fit the harsh army life.
