On the cover of the edition, Rihanna appeared in a drawn headdress made of crystals shaped like ice. The singer herself tried on a diamond cobweb necklace and "cosmic" blue shadows.
The guest photographer of the shooting was multimedia artist Lorna Simpson, who invented and created collages with the singer. One of them depicts Rihanna as if in space, and the other strolls across the bridge in a giant designer hat with feathers, a chic bra and a flying miniskirt.
The portfolio created for the new edition of Essence is titled “On Heaven and Earth”. This issue of the magazine reflects the hardships that people endured in 2020. The editors expressed their gratitude to Rihanna, who gave the world a lot of new experiences with her legendary show Savage x Fenty and lessons from Fenty Beauty and Fenty Skin.
