What could be easier than a T-shirt? It seems that it is a faceless thing that masks individuality. But history shows that it can tell more about you than your wardrobe as a whole.

Fashion historians differ in their opinions. Some believe that the T-shirt appeared at the beginning of the 20th century as clothing for bachelors. It was good because, unlike other things, it didn’t have to be fitted to the figure and could be easily put on (while the shirts of that time had cuffs, sleeves and plastrons attached separately - you cannot cope with such a "puzzle" alone).

Other researchers argue that the T-shirt became part of the uniform of the US Navy in the late 19th century. It was cheap, lightweight, and the short sleeves created extra warmth and absorbed sweat quickly. Thanks to the latter feature, the T-shirt quickly went to the working masses. And then she made a colossal leap: from underwear, which is hidden from strangers, she turned into the clothes in which they show themselves.

At a time when there were no bodybuilders yet, physically developed men chose a T-shirt in order for it to emphasize the relief of the body. By and large, this model serves as a compliment to the figure: it turns into a second skin and emphasizes the contours. By the way, for the same reason, photographers and filmmakers love her so much when they shoot actresses in wet T-shirts.

The t-shirt made its debut in A Streetcar Named Desire when worn by Marlon Brando. His character was a simple, rude guy. And this image literally stuck to the T-shirt. It was worn by the youth of the 50s both in reality and in the cinema. "Savage", "Rebel without a Cause", "Grease" - and these are just the most striking examples. And in each of them the hero resisted society, led a careless and even hooligan lifestyle.

As is often the case with men's wardrobe items, the T-shirt soon settled in women's wardrobes. This is partly due to Jean Seberg, whose iconic image in the painting "On the last breath", released in 1959, is still copied.

Since the manufacturers mainly produced white T-shirts, they gradually acquired an association with a blank sheet on which you can write and draw. At first, the idea was used only by universities that printed their logos. But since the 1960s, print has become a mainstream phenomenon. Rock and roll played a role in this process: fans of musical groups wore T-shirts with the names of their favorite bands to feel part of the subculture. Perhaps the most recognizable design - the parted lips with protruding tongue - was made in 1970 and became the logo of the Rolling Stones. By the way, the first sketch was sold in 2008 for $ 92.5 thousand. Another famous logo - I love NY - was invented a little later to promote tourism in New York. He is so often copied that the artist regularly sues copyright infringers.

All in the same 70s, the T-shirt became a kind of advertising platform. If you wear clothes on which the name of the brand is written across the entire chest, then this is very convenient: you spent money to promote the manufacturer. The same piece of clothing plays the role of a poster: if you go to a rally, want to meet or show your level of intelligence, then you just need to find a T-shirt with the appropriate slogan or make an individual order. Buy a T-shirt featuring Cuban revolutionary leader Che Guevara and everyone will know that you yearn for freedom. Put on a print with Mickey Mouse and you will emphasize spontaneity.

The t-shirt has an interesting property: it changes a person by chance. When it comes to men, she slightly widens the shoulders and narrows the waist, which emphasizes masculinity. It's funny, but women fall for this hook: they consider models in white T-shirts 12% more attractive than those who are wearing different clothes. If a T-shirt has a print that imitates a superhero's clothes, then the person in it passes exams better and shows higher results in intellectual tests. And some researchers believe that a T-shirt you wear regularly (like Mark Zuckerberg, who appears in it at all social events) may be a sign of genius. Therefore, do not deny yourself the desire to buy another one.
