Doctors in Israel performed the world's first surgery using a synthetic cornea that does not require donor tissue. After her, the 78-year-old patient was able to see the very next day.

The operation was performed by surgeons at the Yitzhak Rabin Medical Center with the participation of specialists from the CorNeat biotechnology startup, the developer of the KPro implant. It is designed to replace a deformed, scratched or clouded cornea.

An invasive, but at the same time simple operation, allows you to restore vision within a day. Transplantation of rare donor tissues is not required for the patient. Previously, these tissues were the main obstacle - patients had to look for donors. In addition, not every tissue took root in the recipient's body.

The KPro implant does not cause rejection by the immune system, as it is made of a synthetic non-degradable porous material that mimics the microstructure of the extracellular matrix.

Collagen mesh provides structural and biochemical support to surrounding cells, and during implantation it stimulates cell proliferation, which leads to rapid tissue integration, the article notes.
