According to Carpenter, Jackson suffered from vitiligo, a disease that manifests itself as a disorder of skin pigmentation. That is why, says the journalist, the singer was forced to bleach his skin - to hide the spots, and not because he "wanted to be white," as the newspaper wrote.
An autopsy of Jackson after his death confirmed that he had vitiligo, Carpenter told The Daily Star. “It was so heartbreaking,” she recalls.
