Nature has favorites: it endows the chosen few with an extraordinary talent, and gives some plant species a special aroma. Today I again invite you to the wonderful world of wonderful plant scents: after the floral ones, we will turn our attention to the fruity ones. Moreover, the selected plants will not always have flowers smelling, exuding a certain aroma during the day or in the evening, some will have to grind the leaves in order to feel all the charm of the fruity smell.

Today we will not be limited to just flower crops: fruity aromas wonderfully copy some varieties of herbs, shrubs and trees, so why not include them in our review?

When the European olive blossoms, the trees seem to be enveloped in the scent of lemon.

photo by the author Carriers of your favorite fruit aroma, blooming at different times, can be combined in a single plant composition. Doubles that bloom flowers at the same time can be placed in different areas of the cottage so that their smells do not overlap, because often fruity aromas are complemented by various floral and spicy notes.

Citrus counterparts

A rich palette of lemon, orange, tangerine, bergamot aromas can be found in plants that do not at all belong to the corresponding citrus genus. Perhaps most vividly, the lemon scent is copied by the three-leafed aloisia (Aloysia citrodora). Moreover, the smell is characteristic of all parts of the bush.

Among them is a climbing rose 'New Dawn' with white-pink flowers, which is familiar to many users of the site (from year to year she gives her wonderful apple scent to Vera Tyukaeva in Biysk, Olga Shestakova in Shadrinsk). In addition, the flowers of roses of varieties 'Sylvia', 'Abraham Darby' and others smell like apples.

Strawberry and black currant doubles

In May (or early June), the strawberry-pineapple aroma will bring to the dachas a flowering bush of small-leaved mock-orange (Philadelphus microphyllus).

A little later (in June-July), its wonderful aroma can be replaced by the flowers of the Western Calicant (Calycanthus occidentalis).

In central Russia, it can be grown in a tub culture, placed in the summer on an open terrace, near a resting place. More fully about the Calicante is described in the article:

The aroma of black currant surprises the motley sage (Salvia discolor), which grows on the French and Italian Riviera, and a distinct strong smell is inherent in the entire plant (leaves, stem, flower buds).

It is low (up to 60 cm), so it can be grown in relatively small (1.5 l) pots. In summer, the plant is decorated with dark purple (almost black) flowers with green cups.

Doubles with aromas of exotic fruits: pineapple, mango

An unusual variety of smells is demonstrated by the types and varieties of sage (Salvia), which you have already partially read about earlier: pineapple sage (S. rutilans) and w. elegant (S. elegans) variety 'Scarlet Pineapple', whose bright flowers smell unexpectedly … pineapple. They can be grown in a container. A few fresh leaves added to iced tea will improve the taste of the drink and give it an unusually soft aftertaste.
