Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region in northwest China delivered nearly double-digit growth in electricity generation in the first ten months of the year as part of improving the energy mix and fighting for the environment, Xinhua News Agency reported.

Generation of clean energy such as solar and wind rose 9.5% year on year to 50.96 million kWh between January and October, State Grid Xinjiang Electric Power Co., Ltd. said.

The region's new energy capacity utilization rate reached 90.9% during this period, up 4.3 percentage points from a year ago and well above the record low of 63% in 2016.

Within 10 months, Xinjiang sent 27 billion kWh of electricity to other regions, which is 53% of all green energy produced in the region. Xinjiang is also one of the leading regions in the country in terms of new energy development.

Xinjiang's currently installed "green" power generation capacity is about one third of its total power generation capacity.

To reduce greenhouse gas emissions and combat air pollution, China is moving towards clean energy while reducing its heavy reliance on coal.
