MOSCOW, January 13. / TASS /. A communal accident could have caused the supply of contaminated drinking water to the residents of Dagestan Buinaksk, which caused an outbreak of acute intestinal infection. This opinion was expressed to TASS by the former chief sanitary doctor of the Russian Federation, academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, first deputy chairman of the State Duma committee on education and science Gennady Onishchenko.

"An intestinal infection in winter is, of course, exotic. As a rule, we have trouble with intestinal infections [in the period] August-September. Therefore, there was some kind of accident on the water supply system, which contaminated. Or, without carrying out repair work and without providing disinfection of water, they served it to the population, but even under these conditions, of course, with normal use of water, that is, boiling and so on, this could have been avoided, "he said.

"Most likely, this is some kind of communal accident that needs to be investigated and measures should be taken, including to punish those responsible," Onishchenko concluded. He warned that in the case of contamination of water by sewage, a delayed consequence of its use after an acute infection may be the occurrence of enteral hepatitis or typhoid fever.

"There is a fairly experienced laboratory service, in this case it plays a decisive role both in terms of eliminating this situation and in terms of its prevention with long-term consequences. What I said is enteral hepatitis and typhoid fever," - added the former chief sanitary doctor of the Russian Federation, noting that Buinaksk "has always been unsuccessful" in terms of water supply.
