Skin preparation

The first and main recommendation when working with glitter is to leave the foundation for the last step. “The skin must be clean. Don't use creams or serums - anything that will make it sticky. First, apply glitter and only then everything else, because they crumble and stick instantly,”says Tanya Gorinovich, makeup artist, beauty blogger and co-founder of the Kras & Kruty beauty studio.

“You won't be able to remove glitter with a brush, and a cotton swab will only rub them into your makeup. An eyebrow brush can help, but only if you gently and very patiently brush off one glitter from your face,”advises Alena Lapina, star makeup artist and art director of the Art'Up beauty salon on Patriarchy.

How to apply glitter

In order for the glitter to stick to your eyes or lips and not crumble, they need to be fixed before and preferably after makeup. “Many products can serve as a base - special primers, cream products, liquid matte lipsticks and any creamy shadows,” says Anna Batanova, master of Krygina Studio.

“You can use a cream, especially in the eye area. Glitter should not be applied to an unprepared eyelid, as it is mostly dry and uncomfortable. But never rub in glitter, otherwise it will blend in with a pigmented base like eyeshadow. Apply glitter with a flat synthetic brush, using light, applying strokes. For fine particles, you can use a make-up fixing spray. It needs to be sprayed before and after applying makeup,”warns Anna Shimkova, Lancôme's lead makeup artist.

“Almost all beauty brands have a special base for glitter. It looks like glue. You drive it with your finger into a clean eyelid or in the shade and gently apply a layer of glitter on top. For example, I like the NYX glitter base,”recommends Alena Lapina.

“Glitter can be beautifully wet added to the arrows,” says Kirill Shabalin, national makeup artist for YSL Beaute in Russia.

How to remove loose glitter

One of the favorite life hacks of makeup artists is scotch tape. “You can take ordinary office tape and glue it directly onto your face with tape - it collects all the loose particles well. This is a fairly common technique. If there is no scotch at hand, then you can put concealer on a cotton swab and use twisting movements to remove all unnecessary and clean up the makeup,”recommends Kirill Shabalin.

“My main secret is water. No bases or special adhesives are needed. Just dip the brush in water, it will become wet and the glitter will easily stick to it. Nothing will crumble. Tested by me and my students,”advises Tanya Gorinovich.

“I recommend taking some glitter and adding it to your liquid highlighter or foundation. Choose shimmery sequins in silver or gold shades. I do not advise taking green, red and blue colors,”says Alena Lapina.

For makeup remover, it is best to use a hydrophilic or two-phase product.
