Russian PR man and blogger Anton Vuyma will go on a hunger strike near the US Embassy on November 20. He intends to carry out the action sitting in his Indesit refrigerator. The slogan of the action is “We don’t need American rubbish”. The blogger is outraged by the ugly quality of the technology of this American brand. Anton has been using the Indesit refrigerator since May 2019, and in October 2020, the refrigerator, having worked for less than a year and a half, failed for no apparent reason. Earlier, Anton Vuyma had already bought Indesit - the equipment he bought in 2002 proved to be extremely reliable, but then the quality of the products changed a lot. The blogger associates the deterioration in product quality with the fact that in 2014 the American company Whirlpool Corporation bought the Italian company Indesit. “I began to figure out what the problem is with this refrigerator. It turned out that they were installing a super-cheap Chinese compressor Donper h170cy1, with a wholesale price of 1300 rubles apiece. They weld the copper pipes of the Chinese compressor to the aluminum pipes of the condenser and evaporator. Copper should not be strictly soldered to aluminum. Any technologist knows this. But Indesit and Hotpoint Aristone do it all over the place. This weld will quickly oxidize as the metals react. Then the seam, corroded by corrosion, begins to let the freon outward. I found red spots on the seams. Red spots are formed when freon leaks. With a device measuring air quality, I found an 8-fold increase in chlorine in the air, which I associate with a freon leak, although formally there should be R600a refrigerant from isobutane. That is, they still use a very caustic type of refrigerant without informing customers,”says Anton. “Refrigerator manufacturers are primarily focused on making a profit. If the refrigerator runs too long and is too easy to fix, then businesses will go broke. Previously, all elements of the refrigerator were made of copper tubing. Everything was copper and was in the public domain, it was easy to check for leaks. Now they have begun to be made of aluminum and iron,”says Sergei Bondarenko, a refrigerator repairman. Anton Vuyma went further and studied Indesit refrigerators in stores. All new refrigerators he inspected had red spots on the pipe at the weld point, indicating a refrigerant leak. “I asked the sellers how this could be. They said that the freon is leaking out, since these are exhibition samples. They say they sell only serviceable refrigerators, and they put defective ones at the exhibition,”he said. Problems with Indesit appliances are already well known to consumers. So in Kirov in 2014, 13 people extinguished a washing machine, and the state standard of Belarus in the same year removed Indesit equipment from sale altogether - all Indesit refrigerators purchased at the Korona shopping center in Minsk had structural defects. General Director of Indesit Company Int. on the territory of the CIS, Philip Kaltenbach then promised to fix all the defects, but this did not happen. The problems that Anton Vuyma talks about are design problems of technology, not assembly defects. “The poor quality of Russian goods is often attributed to the foreign roots of these goods, rather than Russian poor quality. A Russian engineer designs things to work well and be reliable, while foreigners design products to sell well and bring maximum income. Therefore, purely Russian developments are often very reliable and simple, while foreign ones are made as if they were designed by scammers,”the blogger explains.
