EKATERINBURG, July 2 - RIA Novosti. Doctors of the regional clinical hospital 2 (OKB 2) in Tyumen removed a ten-centimeter worm from under the skin of a woman's face, the clinic said on Monday.
"For a resident of Tyumen, OKB 2 doctors performed an operation to remove a ten-centimeter helminth (a parasitic worm - ed.), Which lived under the skin of the face," the message says.
The discovered filamentous worm turned out to be dirofilaria (a genus of roundworms - ed.). It is assumed that its larva enters the human body at the site of the insect bite. Insects, in turn, become infected from dogs, cats, and some other animals and carry larvae in their proboscis. Experts note that this happens extremely rarely. At the same time, the dirofilariae does not multiply in the human body, because it does not turn into a sexually mature individual.
The first symptom of the disease can be considered the appearance under the skin or mucous membrane of a tumor-like formation, which is accompanied by redness, itching in this part of the body. The education itself may not bring any discomfort to the patient.
A characteristic sign of the disease is the migration of the helminth, which is outwardly noted as the movement of the formation along the body. Treatment of dirofilariasis is only a surgical removal of the helminth, the hospital specifies.
To protect yourself from the possibility of infection when going out into the woods, you must use mosquito repellents for walks in parks. In the spring-summer period, it is necessary to carry out examinations in veterinary organizations of domestic animals, and treatment if parasite infestation is detected.
To avoid contact of mosquitoes with pets and humans, it is recommended to protect the room with nets for windows, ventilation openings, vestibules, doors of private houses, the clinic notes.
