In Russia, from December 1 to 23, there is a decrease in sales of such traditional New Year products as champagne, tangerines and red caviar, compared to the same period in 2019. This was established by analysts of the Taxcom company, RT reports. The study examined over 23 billion cash register receipts. Against the background of an increase in the average price of tangerines by 7% (94 rubles in December 2020), sales of these fruits fell by 14%. A similar situation is observed with champagne. "The average price of champagne in December 2020 is 410 rubles per bottle. The average price increased by 31%, sales fell by 48% compared to the same period in 2019," the company said. They clarified that the average cost of a can of red caviar this December is 630 rubles, which is 2% more than last year. Gourmet sales also fell 6%. Such dynamics of demand is explained by several factors, the main one of which is the desire of people to optimize their expenses, says Georgy Ostapkovich, director of the Center for Market Research at the Institute for Statistical Studies and Economics of Knowledge at the Higher School of Economics. "I think that if before people bought these products in large quantities (for example, three bottles of champagne, three kilograms of tangerines), now they began to limit," the expert said. In addition, according to him, the cancellation due to the pandemic of corporate events in many companies and organizations of the country also influenced the drop in sales. "As a rule, both alcohol and fruit are bought for corporate parties, which always remain. Of course, the reduction of corporate events, possible meetings is also a factor. Surely 2021 will restore everything: both traditions and consumption volumes," Ostapkovich said. Earlier it was reported that caviar has risen sharply in Russia. According to experts, the price soared by more than a third. The producers say that the coronavirus year is the reason for the increase in the cost of the delicacy. In addition, the pre-New Year excitement played a role.
