The Federal Air Transport Agency notified the airlines of the termination of air traffic between Russia and the UK from December 22 to December 29, where a new mutation of the coronavirus was found. Both regular and cargo-passenger flights were banned. Business aviation can operate flights between Russia and the UK only with the permission of the COVID-19 headquarters. A Daily Storm source in one of the companies organizing business flights said that first of all, permits will be issued to British citizens "stuck" in Russia.

“The situation is ambiguous. There are passengers who have stayed in London and want to urgently fly to Russia. And there are those who have long planned a trip to London, but all plans collapsed. According to preliminary information, these permits of the headquarters will be issued to British citizens so that they can fly home from Russia. But the rules may still change within a couple of days,”the source said.

The interlocutor of the Daily Storm in another company specializing in private air travel, noted that now clearly new rules have not yet been determined by the headquarters itself and the companies are in dialogue to fully agree on all instructions.

“Rosaviatsia duly notified the airlines that from 00:00 Moscow time on December 22, 2020 to 00:00 Moscow time on December 29, 2020, regular and irregular passenger flights between the Russian Federation and the UK were temporarily suspended,” the agency said in a statement.

It is specified that both Russian and foreign airlines have been notified of the suspension of flights. "The issuance of permits for non-scheduled passenger transportation by business aviation flights to the UK from the Russian Federation and back during the specified period [until December 29] will be carried out by the Federal Air Transport Agency, subject to a separate decision of the operational headquarters for each flight," the department added.

On December 21, Aeroflot canceled all flights to the UK after Russia suspended flights to the country. Aeroflot noted that the airfare will be refunded in full. On the Aeroflot website, the sale of air tickets for London flights was suspended until the end of January.

Earlier, the headquarters for the fight against coronavirus announced that flights with Foggy Albion would be closed from midnight on December 22. The restrictions will be in effect for at least a week. Before Russia, more than 20 countries, including most of Europe, suspended their flights with Great Britain in whole or in part.

The detection of the SARS-CoV-2 mutation in the UK was previously reported by the head of the country's Ministry of Health Matt Hancock. According to the British Advisory Board on New and Emerging Respiratory Virus Threats, the new variant of the coronavirus is spreading faster and could be 70% more infectious than the original.
