On October 26, State Duma deputies were sent several hundred postcards with information about the case of the journalist and adviser to the head of Roscosmos Ivan Safronov. According to the authors of the idea, in this way they intend to draw attention to the very case of Safronov, who is accused of treason, as well as to the application of this article - they believe that the law is "inflated" and allows starting a criminal case against many Russians.

“It seems important to us that information about the Safronov case was brought to every deputy and senator, and to every responsible official. Since there is no other option, and we know that all government agencies are now closed from visitors, then in the form of appeals - said one of the organizers of the action Maxim Ivanov, a former journalist «Kommersant<>

A member of the initiative group explained that the postcards were sent to all State Duma deputies, as well as members of the Federation Council and the leadership of the presidential administration of the Russian Federation. “According to the legislation of the Russian Federation, [appeal] must be reviewed within 30 days from the date of their registration "- he noted.

As Ivanov said, the action should draw attention both to the Safronov case and to the application of Article 275 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation “High Treason”. In his opinion, the law on treason is now "bloated" and "rubber", that is, it is easily applied even without serious grounds. “It's time to take a closer look at law enforcement practice. Because Safronov's case is not the first, and if the law is not changed, then it will not be the last. It is obvious"- he clarified.

“We want the deputies to take up their direct responsibilities. That is, we looked at the law enforcement practice, including the Safronov case, and revised the bloated article 275 of the Criminal Code, which harms specific citizens more than helps to ensure abstract state security”- concluded the journalist.

Advisor to the head of Roscosmos, a former journalist of Kommersant and Vedomosti, Ivan Safronov, was arrested on July 7, 2020. A case of high treason was brought against him. Safronov does not admit guilt. According to the FSB, he was recruited by the Czech secret service in 2012. The investigation believes that Safronov worked for the Office of External Relations and Information of the Czech Republic, and the final recipient of the classified data was the United States.
