“I don’t want to engage in polemics, I just want to say that it will not hurt us if we apologize for the unfair treatment of the indigenous peoples of Mexico during the foreign invasion,” the head of state said. “But everyone is free to freely determine their foreign policy, we we respect the principle of non-interference, the principle of self-determination of peoples. Earlier this week, during a visit to Mexico City, Spanish Foreign Minister Arancia Gonzalez did not ask for forgiveness for the conquista (the process of the Spanish conquest of America), urging to look to the future and think about what countries would like to do in 50 or 100 years.

The Mexican president, who took office in December 2018, has repeatedly called on Spain to apologize for the cruelty against the indigenous population committed during the conquest, but these demands have not yet been met.
